Cost Optimization - Are your objectives aligned with your partner's?

It's tax filing season in the United States. You could file your taxes or work with tax consultants leveraging their deep expertise in taxation laws. Would you consider working with a tax consultant whose consulting charges are based on your annual income and not based on the value provided, or tax savings impacted?

The answer is obvious. You probably wouldn't work with such a tax consultant whose incentives are not aligned with your objectives? You would prefer perfect alignment for both the parties involved and maximise the ROI for you.

Let's take another example where you could work with a financial advisor. You would prefer a financial advisor is incentivised based on the ROI and not just the size of your portfolio.

How do you work with Cloud Cost Optimization partners?

We are in the uncertain economic environment. Many companies have taken company board-level decision on hiring freeze; and cost reduction. For companies using the public cloud, cloud spend is a significant cost line item; hence, cloud cost optimization is a priority. You probably are working with a partner who is a cloud cost optimization expert.

I would ask a couple of questions here

Are your objectives and your partner's objectives are aligned?

If you do not prefer working with tax consultants or financial advisors if the objectives aren't aligned, why should you work with a cloud cost optimization partner any different?

Is your partner getting paid % of your cloud spend?

How could your partner improve their topline? They would have to find ways to increase your cloud spend. The partner's objectives and your objectives are misaligned.

Is your partner getting paid based on hourly rate, with no correlation to impacted cloud cost savings?

How could your partner improve their topline? They would have to find ways to spend more hours on the project. If the partner isn't incentivised based on the impacted cloud cost savings, again the objectives seems not to be aligned.

Is your partner getting paid based on impacted cloud cost savings?

How could your partner improve their topline? They have to maximise your cloud cost savings. This is perfect alignment of your objectives and partners objectives.

I would prefer to work with a partner where my objectives are perfectly aligned with my partner's objectives.
